The United States, the richest nation in the world, does not guarantee health care for all of its citizens. Despite our staggering wealth and incredible medical advancements, millions of people are left uninsured or underinsured, trapped in a suffocating cycle of rising costs.
A shocking 85 million people in America are either uninsured or underinsured, and their numbers are expected to increase as pandemic-era programs end. America’s health care crisis is not a new phenomenon. This is a long-standing problem exacerbated by COVID-19, which has exposed deep flaws in our healthcare system. Health care, a basic human right, has been compromised in the name of profit.

The dire state of health care in America
Medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy in the United States. CNBC reported that 61% of Americans with medical debt owe more than $1,000 and 21% owe at least $5,000. The burden of medical debt is not just a financial problem; its a question of life or death.
In a time defined by a devastating global pandemic, millions of Americans are skipping necessary doctor visits, rationing life-saving drugs, or outright refusing treatment because of cost. These realities persist even for policyholders, with high deductibles and copayments often constituting insurmountable barriers to needed care.
The case for Medicare for All
Enter the Medicare for All Act 2023monumental legislation to end our failing health care system by establishing a single-payer health care system where all Americans have access to comprehensive health care services, regardless of employment status, their income level or pre-existing conditions.
The bill will expand coverage to include primary care, vision, dental care, prescription drugs, mental health, addictions, long-term services, reproductive health care, and more. No American would have to fear bankruptcy because of medical debt, choose between medicine and food, or delay necessary medical treatment because of cost.
As Representative Pramila Jayapal declared in a press release: “Breaking a bone or getting sick should not be a reason why people in the richest country in the world go bankrupt. … This solution is health insurance for all – everyone is in, no one is out.
The power of people over profits
Sulma Arias, director of People’s Action, succinctly summed up the crux of the matter with the current system: “Our health care system allows greedy private health insurance companies to put profits before people.” The Medicare for All Act offers a solid alternative to this systemic failure. By replacing the corporate takeover of our healthcare system with a vision where healthcare is a human right, the legislation pledges to elevate the collective well-being of our nation above the pursuit of profit. . But to make it a reality, your support is essential.
No American should have to choose between their health and their financial stability. It’s not just about politics, it’s about our lives and our future. It’s time to prioritize health over profits. It’s time to put our lives and our future first. It’s time for Medicare for All.
