Under Licht’s tenure, it was truly a terrible year for CNN. I don’t know what “relinquishing control of business operations” means. It could be a resignation, firing, demotion or transfer to another part of the vast Warner Bros. empire. Discovery.
Daily Kos writer Hunter was certainly hoping for a dismissal after Licht learned all the wrong lessons from his disastrous Trump town hall. Heck, Licht’s response was to chew on CNN reporter Oliver Darcy for publicly criticizing the event! Mark Sumner was happy to point out the collapse in CNN’s ratings following this town hall. Also, I hadn’t realized it, but Keith Olbermann took to the pages of the Daily Kos to dump Licht last September.
Either way, the guy didn’t befriend his “let the Republicans lie” brand of journalism because, really, that’s not what journalism is supposed to be. It is supposed to inform people of the truth. CNN staff hated what Licht was trying to do. Viewers hated it and left in droves. Freaking newsmax began beating CNN in the ratings. And business suits hated it, because if the money isn’t earned, what’s the point? Brief, he shit the bed.
Good riddance. Too bad CNN didn’t listen to Hunter’s advice and gave the job to Christiane Amanpour.
