Representative Jamaal Bowman to speak at the Columbia Climate School graduation

Jamaal Bowman, Representative for New York’s 16th Congressional District, will deliver the commencement address at the Columbia Climate School Class Day Ceremony, which will be held in person on Friday, May 12, 2023 at the Morningside Heights campus in the university.
Announcing the news to the Columbia Climate community, Founding Dean Alex Halliday said, “As an activist, teacher and advocate, Congressman Bowman has brought investments to his New York district to support schools, resilience to climate change, care for the elderly, voters’ rights and civil protection. rights. He is a great speaker to recognize and celebrate the achievements of our students at The Climate School and will inspire us all to create our own future journeys and projects.
Bowman grew up in New York and lived in public housing. He began his career as a teacher of crisis intervention at a Bronx public school and then served as a principal for a decade at a Bronx college. In 2020, he was elected to the United States Congress where he stood with communities devastated by climate change, including Hurricane Ida, bringing relief to families, individuals and small business owners. In 2021, Representative Bowman introduced the Green New Deal for Public Schools legislation to build and modernize carbon-free, climate-resilient K-12 public schools across the country.
