This is the way. But is it really? On The Mandalorianthe titular character has always put a ton of faith in the words of the Armorer, a wise Mandalorian who not only can craft armor but knows all about the stories and customs of the galaxy. It is the gunsmith who, on Boba Fett’s Booktold Mando he was no longer a Mandalorian because he took off his helmet, then hatched a plan to get him back to his armor.
This scene looked like a plan for the upcoming third season of The Mandalorianso when io9 spoke to mandalorian producers Jon Favreau and David Philoni, we asked if there were any specific clues fans should grab. But the answer turned into something morea dissection of whether or not the Armorer can be trusted, or even have the Mandalorian’s best interests at heart.
“We talk about her a lot,” Filoni told io9. “Even in what she knows versus what she speculates, and what kind of mentor slash Gandalf slash Merlin really is. How well does she understand what is possible for Mando or not? Favreau added, “And does she share everything she knows?”
Filoni, as he is known to do, compared the dynamics to that of the original star wars trilogy. “I was wondering about Obi-Wan and Yoda,” Filoni said. “Like when they told Luke he had to face Darth Vader, they never said to him, ‘You can save your father.’ In fact they make it look like you won’t be able to do this And do they know it’s a possibility or not Does it undermine Luke if he’s told it’s a possibility to save his dad ?”
“So I think she’s very careful about what she says to both Mando and the audience,” he continued. “Because I think she may not really know what to expect for the future, but she’s based on tradition and what’s been passed down to her – ‘The Way’ and your interpretation of ‘ The Way”. And his responsibility is to guide people as clearly as possible while still leaving room for all events.
Filoni added that another key point is that the Armorer may not even fully understand the shared bond between the Mandalorian and Grogu. “I think she reads the play a lot,” he said. “Why did this little Grogu character, Mando take him, why is he back? We used to talk about (how) that probably means something to her. It means something to us. But all of that is part of the process of discovering the story as it unfolds and evolves. And yes, she has definitely become an emerging knowledge character. The lost knowledge is really what she is. possesses.
“And the prophecy,” added Favreau. “Knowledge of prophecy.”
We will see how well the gunsmith plays in The Mandalorian season 3 when it returns March 1 on Disney+.
