There is a long list of improvements in No release notes for beta, as a Nothing-ified weather app with the company’s signature dot-matrix UI style. Other expected Android 13 updates are included, including a QR code scanner in the quick settings menu and privacy updates for the photo picker.
But the one upgrade Phone 1 owners are probably most looking forward to is improved app loading speeds: in particular, Nothing claims that apps open up to 50% faster. This could be the result of a shift from external developers to internal developers – CEO Carl Pei said Android Authority that since the launch of Phone 1, the company has built its own team of engineers. Switching from the externally developed code base allowed them to make the system “smoother and more stable”.
If you’re a Phone 1 owner eager to check out the new updates but weren’t part of the beta program, it looks like you’ll have to wait a bit longer. Devices running the previous stable release don’t appear to be part of this first wave of updates – that’s also the case with my review unit.
